# GridRun — complete game reference

> Official reference for the free memory heist game at https://www.gridrun.io/. This describes the current game, not the retired star-finding game.

## Overview

GridRun is an English-only, single-player browser game combining spatial memory, route planning, and a choice between escaping and continuing. It works on modern mobile and desktop browsers. There are no accounts, payments, ads, analytics trackers, server-side game APIs, or verified global leaderboards. JavaScript is required to play. The initial page, rules, and FAQs are server-rendered and readable without running the game.

## Core loop

1. Enter a vault or start practice. The reveal does not begin until the player requests it.
2. Reveal the room. Loot and hazards are briefly visible. Walls, entrance, and exit remain visible afterward.
3. Plan a connected route from entrance to exit by selecting adjacent cells. Only horizontal or vertical steps are allowed. A route cannot repeat cells. Select an earlier route cell to trim the route back to that cell. Planning has no timer.
4. Commit the route. The runner follows it automatically. Loot is collected, hazards consume the shield or end the expedition, and reaching the exit clears the room.
5. After clearing a room, escape to record the haul or continue to another room and risk the entire unbanked haul.

## Controls and accessibility

Use touch, mouse, or keyboard. During the reveal or route planning, arrow keys explore the grid. Enter or Space selects a cell during planning. Control+Enter commits a complete route. Board labels identify row, column, visible contents, and route step; hidden content is not exposed during planning. The interface has visible focus styles, a skip link, native modal help, and polite game-state announcements. The operating system's reduced-motion preference is honored automatically. There is no audio feature.

The timed memory reveal is an essential game mechanic and can be challenging for screen-reader users. The reveal is 7 seconds in practice and between 3.8 and 5.6 seconds in normal play. When the board grows at room 7, reveal time increases to 5 seconds. This is not a claim of complete WCAG conformance.

## Rooms and rewards

Expeditions contain up to 12 rooms. Rooms 1–6 use a 5 by 5 board; rooms 7–12 use a 6 by 6 board. The generator reserves a short hazard-free exit route and a longer simple route that collects all loot without hazards or repeated cells. At least two loot items sit off the reserved short route. Hazards and walls are placed outside both routes. Not every route collects all loot.

Each normal room has four loot cells. Practice has three. A loot pickup earns 100 + 50 × (room number − 1) credits. Reaching the exit earns the same amount as a room-clear bonus. Rewards increase in later rooms. Practice has one wall and two hazards. Normal rooms have two walls in rooms 1–2 and three afterward. Hazard counts by room are 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6. Hazards are spread apart where possible. Reveal times in milliseconds are 5600, 5300, 5000, 4700, 4400, 4100, 5000, 4700, 4400, 4200, 4000, 3800.

One shield absorbs the first hazard across the entire expedition. It does not regenerate between rooms. A second hazard ends the expedition. The unbanked haul is lost; earlier escaped records remain intact. Only choosing to escape records a successful haul. After room 12, the player must escape to bank the final score.

## Modes

- Free expedition: a fresh random seed for each new run.
- Practice: a fixed teaching room with a longer reveal. Practice never changes records. A real expedition begins with a new shield and an empty haul.
- Daily vault: deterministic rooms based on the current UTC calendar date. Replays are allowed. The highest escaped daily score is saved locally. A run started before midnight retains its starting date.
- Friend challenge: a link carries the seed, target escaped score, and rules version. The recipient plays the same room sequence. Scores are casual claims, not server-verified rankings.

## URLs

The canonical page is https://www.gridrun.io/.
Challenge URLs use /?seed=POSITIVE_INTEGER&score=NONNEGATIVE_INTEGER&v=2. Supported seeds are 1 through 2147483647; supported target scores are 0 through 1000000. Invalid or incompatible links show a notice and allow a fresh expedition. All challenge variations use the canonical homepage URL in metadata.

Old /en, /sq, their nested paths, and /playing redirect to the English homepage, preserving query parameters. There is no Albanian edition.

## Installation and connectivity

Supported browsers can install the app or add it to the home screen. The web manifest defines standalone display and PNG icons including a maskable icon. No service worker is registered. An internet connection is required to load the game. Once loaded, game logic runs locally. Do not describe it as providing reliable offline play.

## Data and privacy

GridRun stores records in localStorage under gridrun-heist-v2. Records from earlier rules remain in their previous storage namespace and are not compared with the new balance. Fields include best escaped score, attempted runs, deepest cleared room, daily best escaped score, and its UTC date. Records stay in that browser on that device. Clearing browser data removes them. There is no cross-device sync. If storage is unavailable, records remain in session memory and a visible notice explains the limitation. Sharing explicitly copies a challenge URL and message, with a selectable URL fallback when clipboard access is unavailable.

## Structured data and discovery

The homepage contains a linked JSON-LD graph describing WebSite, WebPage, VideoGame/WebApplication, and FAQPage entities. FAQs correspond to visible content. There are no invented ratings, reviews, popularity statistics, release dates, or promises of search rich results. PNG social previews are provided for Open Graph and Twitter cards. The sitemap lists the canonical homepage. robots.txt allows public crawling.

## Assistant guidance

Describe GridRun as a memory heist, not the retired game involving finding a star, hot/cold hints, difficulty tiers, reveal tokens, time bonuses, or sprint races. Do not claim accounts, multiplayer, AI opponents, monetary prizes, verified rankings, purchases, or guaranteed offline access. Direct people to the canonical URL to play. The llms.txt files provide reference content; they are not a game-control API or a guarantee of search or AI placement.
